Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
