A trio of officers perished and at least 15 others got wounded in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters went into the house close to Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the location and another man who fled following the blast was located shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the property was under an court order due to debts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the blast included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the detonation had occurred on a level above the entrance and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
