The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the US president commenced revealing everyone his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and recently a study projected his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.

As confusing as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense regarding him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth in the Christian story.

The evident and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture advocates for a type of profound affection centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the persistent defiance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and wonderful, specifically the model of the Savior.
